Prof. Dr. Cem Dinç
said that during the Covid-19 pandemic phase, factors such as inactivity, weight
gain, smoking, stress, and increased workload at home increase the risk of
developing diseases related to the spine, especially lumbar and neck hernia,
saying, "After low back and neck pain, upper respiratory tract infections
are the second most usual disease in the world that causes loss of wight."
Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery. "Waist and neck pain is the
world's second most common illness, after upper respiratory tract infections,
causing loss of work and control," said Dr. Cem Dinç. Back and neck
disorders, which are more prevalent among office staff, have taken on a new
dimension as a result of the Covidd-19 pandemic. "Back and neck problems
grew in a year, during which desk work was concentrated in sofas, sedentary
home life increased, and exercise areas were limited," he said.
"WRONG
PREFERENCES INCREASE THE SPINE DISEASES"
Stating that many
diseases cause spine disorders, Prof. Dr. Cem Dinç continued his words as
follows:
"If we put aside
the factors that cannot be changed, such as our genetic characteristics or
congenital diseases, we observe that the wrong choices in life of a large group
of patients are effective in spinal disorders. Environmental factors, inactivity,
malnutrition, obesity, smoking, lifestyle, sports, work-life, etc. Many factors
disrupt the structure of the spine. This situation paves the way for the
development of many spine diseases, especially waist and neck hernias. "
SPORT IS A MUST AT THE
HOME
"The important
thing is to aim to live and function in the posture of our spine, to strengthen
our muscle tissue by exercising, and to support our spine," Prof. Dr. Dinç
said, emphasising the importance of home exercise during the pandemic era. In
today's world, where sports facilities are scarce, we must develop the habit of
doing light and moderate exercise at home. Every day, we can walk for at least
half an hour. We should complete it with exercise movements that strengthen the
neck area, "he said,
MOST PATIENTS ARE
DIAGNOSED THE PAIN FREE HERNIA
Prof. Dr. Cem Dinç, in
response to the widespread misconception that the most important symptom of a
hernia is normally moderate pain, said, "The most important symptom of a
hernia is usually severe pain."The hernia can grow painlessly. It is
possible to see a hernia in a lumbar and neck MRI, which we will randomly take
in a healthy group between the ages of 30 and 50, who do not have any pain
complaints. "This issue is a back and neck condition if the radiological
diagnosis we see in MRI is reflected clinically."
"WARNING: IF THE
PAIN ATTACKS THE LEG AND THE ARM"
Describing that most
of the hernias that do not relieve pain or cause loss of strength despite the
treatment require surgical intervention, Dinç completed his words as follows:
"Most of the
lumbar hernias that require surgery cause pain spreading to the leg, and neck
hernias to the arm. It is inevitable for these patients to spread the neck pain
to the back, between the shoulder blades. The purpose of surgery is to
eliminate the pain spreading to the leg and arm, which reduces the comfort of
life."
